The ITER Organization announced on 23 July 2026 the completion of all four vacuum-vessel sectors manufactured in the Republic of Korea - among the largest first-of-a-kind components built for the ITER tokamak, the international fusion experiment under construction at Cadarache, France. The vacuum vessel is the doughnut-shaped steel chamber, on the order of 5,000 tonnes when assembled, that will contain the plasma. Interesting Engineering, reporting an earlier milestone (September 2024) when ITER's first vessel sector was completed, described the vessel as the structure that holds the fusion reactions and noted that ITER's roughly 840 cubic metres of plasma - about ten times larger than existing tokamaks - is designed to reach the high-energy regime needed to produce significant fusion power.
