The World Trade Organization, in a 19 March 2026 update, forecast world merchandise trade growth slowing to 1.9% in 2026 from 4.6% in 2025, before recovering to 2.6% in 2027, and named the Middle East conflict as the main risk - sustained high energy prices could cut 2026 trade growth to 1.4%. It highlighted the near-collapse of Strait of Hormuz shipping, from about 138 commercial vessels a day to almost zero, threatening fertiliser supplies and raising transport and insurance costs.
