The International Energy Agency's Electricity 2026 report finds that renewable output rose rapidly in 2025 to virtually match coal-fired generation, and forecasts that renewables and nuclear together will supply around half of global electricity by 2030. The IEA projects global electricity demand growing about 3.6% a year over 2026-2030 — roughly 50% faster than the previous decade — with emerging economies accounting for nearly 80% of the additional consumption and China close to half of the increase. An earlier Carbon Brief analysis of IEA forecasts (July 2025) reported that renewables were on course to overtake coal as the world's top power source by 2026.
