The World Meteorological Organization's 28 May 2026 update, 'New report suggests more global temperature records ahead,' projects that annual global mean near-surface temperature for 2026-2030 will run between 1.3C and 1.9C above the 1850-1900 baseline. WMO puts an 86% probability that at least one year in 2026-2030 will surpass 2024 as the warmest on record, a 91% chance that at least one year temporarily exceeds 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, and a 75% chance the five-year average exceeds 1.5C. Reporting the same update, UN News adds WMO's caveat that temporary breaches of 1.5C do not by themselves invalidate the Paris Agreement's long-term goal, which concerns sustained warming over decades.
