The UN Forum on Forests Secretariat's Global Forest Goals Report 2026 (11 May 2026) reports that the world lost more than 40 million hectares of forest between 2015 and 2025 — an area comparable to Germany or Japan — including 16 million hectares of primary forest important for biodiversity and climate. Of the 26 Global Forest Goals, it finds seven targets substantially achieved, 17 partially progressing and two off track: reversing forest loss and ending extreme poverty among forest-dependent communities. Forests News (CIFOR-ICRAF), reporting the same assessment, notes that global spending on sustainable forest management reached about USD 84 billion in 2023, far short of the roughly USD 300 billion estimated as needed each year.
